Abstract

In the fight against the climate crisis, the concept of energy democracy has gained importance in recent years for achieving both intra-generational and inter-generational justice. The essence of this concept lies in reducing the damage caused by the fossil fuel economy and promoting the use of renewable, sustainable, and localized energy sources. Encouraging small and medium- sized enterprises to meet their needs from local energy sources and produce energy at the local level facilitates more equitable access to energy for everyone. Increasing participation in decision- making processes at all levels, emphasizing transparency, and particularly prioritizing accountability principles lead to more democratic sharing of energy. Closely related to the concept of climate justice, one of the practical applications of energy democracy is renewable energy cooperatives. This study will evaluate the future of renewable energy cooperatives in Turkey through the lens of energy democracy and propose solutions.
